2nd DAY OF THE MASTER OF THE OCEAN FESTIVAL SALUTED BY WHALES!
CABARETE, Dominican Republic— 24th of February, 2020
The second day of the Master of the Ocean 2020 started with tropical sunshine and humpback whales saluting the athletes right in front of the competition site. There were overall good conditions for surfing with a 4 to 6 foot moderate swell that became progressively better throughout the morning. Overall surfing athletes got to a good start with solid performances throughout their heats. In Heat 1, 4 time title holder Zane Schweitzer executed solid manoeuvres to obtain 1st place followed by Diego Anta in 2nd place and Christopher Buenger from Germany in 3rd place. The 2nd heat showed more solid sets with Francis Gonzalez showing some great surfing placing 1st, followed by Sammy Perez Hults, a Dominican 2020 Olympic hopeful in windsurfing, in 2nd place and Anthony Collar in 3rd place. The final heat of the Overall Surf this morning was an exciting first place for past Master of the Ocean Winner, Luciano Gonzalez, who pulled off the best front side attack and aerial move on an optimal wave and had the audience and judges captivated. 2nd place in the 3rd heat goes to legendary Actionman Brian Talma and some great waves were caught by our 3rd place Estonian woman athlete, Maarja Kivistik. It became slightly windy and a bit choppy after the 3rd heat, so further surfing was postponed.
In the early afternoon, tropical conditions remained sunny and slightly windy but not windy enough for Overall Kiting or Windsurfing and not optimal for Overall Surf or SUP. By late afternoon, there was no adequate wind for kiting or windsurfers so organizers called it a day for competitions. Despite nature calling the shots, spirits were high at the contest site and athletes practiced for projects that will be presented on Thursday the 27th as part of the Beach Culture World Tour. Athletes enjoyed tropical beats on the beach all afternoon.
Adrenaline and expectations remain high for the 3rd day of the Master of the Ocean 2020 which will start early with Overall SUP. The 25th of February promises good conditions for our international athletes. Look out for more action and amazing world-class performances as well as local talents!
